Fishers Making Waves
At the beginning of 2024, I travelled to remote villages in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia, to capture the project ‘Kebersamaan Untuk Lautan’ (KUL), translating to ‘Togetherness for the Ocean’ in Indonesian. An initiative quietly re-shaping shark conservation amidst the shadows of extinction. KUL bridges conservation and community welfare by encouraging fishers to release critically endangered sharks and rays. Caught as valuable bycatch, species such as Scalloped Hammerheads and Wedgefish, face extinction.
